tigergps_2092_80082354All you really need is a GPS that can point you to a specific Longitude and Latitude position, something that most GPS devices can do. Though there are some basic features to look for that will make your Geocaching experience much more enjoyable. General features to look for when purchasing a GPS unit to geocache include: (1) Lightweight and compact, makes it easier to carry especially on long hikes and when you need to negotiate through rocks and trees (look for a wrist strap too!). (2) Waterproof, caches can be hidden under or near water and you never know when you might slip crossing a creek or river. (3) Long battery life, a must for those hard-to-find, remote caches. (4) Waypoint storage, that will hold more cache locations (don’t forget to mark your car as a waypoint to ensure you find your way back.) (5) Screen readability, should be easy to read in daylight and at night.

There are some more advanced features to look for that will make it even easier for you to find that big cache that include: (1) WAAS-enabled, that means your GPS unit will give you better position accuracy, within 3 meters (10 feet) 95% of the time. (2) Built-in digital Compass, they are convenient and come in handy when you get within 100 feet of your cache (you’ll need to stand still for a few seconds to get a direction reading). (3) Altimeter, shows how high up you are for those vertically hidden caches. (4) Mapping Capabilities, makes it easier to navigate when you can download maps to your unit and are able to see the terrain you will be trekking through, as well as when looking for places to cross rivers and things. Garmin’s Colorado and Oregon GPS receivers come with topographical maps already pre installed. (5) External antenna, for use under heavy tree cover or difficult terrain where it may be difficult for the GPS to maintain a strong lock on the satellite signal.

There are, what are called “Paperless Geocaching GPS receivers.” Garmin has worked with Groundspeak to enable their Colorado and Oregon handheld GPS receivers to be compatible with the “.gpx file.” This allows you to download cache data including descriptions, hints, waypoint information, and cache logs directly from www.Geocaching.com to your Garmin GPS unit via a USB connection to the computer, so you can eliminate printing out paper cache pages. In addition, Geocaching data can be transferred wireless between two Garmin users in close proximity. This make the Garmin Colorado and Garmin Oregon handheld GPS receivers truly a “Geoaching friendly” GPS receiver.

Groundspeak has also created a interactive Geocaching experience with their “Wherigo player” that combines adventure games with GPS technology. Imagine playing Zork, Secret of Monkey Island or Myst, but in the park around the corner, or on the beach during your family vacation. Rather than clicking the mouse and selecting a location to move your character, you physically move from one location to the next to advance the story. Rather than searching for puzzle clues on a screen, you look for them in the real life. Garmin is the first GPS manufacturer to include the Wherigo player already installed on their Colorado and Oregon handheld GPS receivers. Using Wherigo, you can create interactive tours, adventure games and puzzles that give you endless possibilities of adventure.

Product Description

The Foretrex 201 is a wearable Personal Navigator, perfect for outdoor and marine enthusiasts who desire hands-free GPS navigation in a lightweight, affordable package. At a mere 2.75 ounces, this waterproof wonder is lighter than most watches, and its wrist-top mount frees up hands for outdoor activities and sports an ergonomic wristband. The 201 model comes with a recharging unit so you never have to stock up on batteries for all your daily adventures, but consider the Foretrex 101 that runs on 2 AAA batteries if you're wandering away from the power outlet for a while.

With a user-friendly interface, the rugged Foretrex 201 simplifies navigation, making it ideal for the backcountry or water. Its six dedicated buttons (GoTo, Page, Enter/Mark, Up, Down and Power) make it easy to operate. It offers the most essential navigation data -- enhanced GPS accuracy, extensive storage for waypoints, and reversible routes and tracks -- on an easy-to-read display. Don't worry about packing extra batteries, because the Foretrex 201 runs on an internal lithium battery for 15 hours (typical use). Simply recharge and go.

The Foretrex 201 also comes equipped with special features sure to please mariners and hikers alike. It includes a unique application for sailing and paragliding racers that allows them to configure the start sequence of a race. The countdown is displayed in a large-number format that audibly alerts the user at each phase of the start sequence. With the help of Garmin's exclusive TracBack® technology, hikers can mark a campsite, go trekking all day, and follow the electronic "breadcrumb trail" back to camp in time for dinner.

The WAAS difference

  • 100 meters: Accuracy of the original GPS system, which was subject to accuracy degradation under the government-imposed Selective Availability (SA) program.
  • 15 meters: Typical GPS position accuracy without SA.
  • 3-5 meters: Typical differential GPS (DGPS) position accuracy.
  • Less than 3 meters: Typical WAAS position accuracy.
WAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.

How it Works
WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.

Who benefits from WAAS?
Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does.

One Design Racing GPS

Review Date: May 18, 2004
Reviewer: K. Martin, Westport, CT United States
From a sailor's perspective ... this thing rocks.

My class does not permit electronic aids for racing, so I cannot mount a GPS on the boat or put a speedo through the hull. I needed a way to get knots feedback during training. I gave this a try. I am happy. The unit provides just what I wanted: quick feedback on trim / crew position when there are no other boats to race.

Features that work for me -- waterproof, WAAS accurate to 17feet, knot meter only lags about 2-3 seconds on actual, adjustable countdown for starts, manual magnetic/true heading adjustment, manual tacking angle input (really cool - it beeps on VMG layline), adjustable display screens, easy to read.

If your hands are busy and the cockpit is wet - consider this model over handheld or mounted alternatives. Did I mention the BIG NUMBER 5 minute countdown feature with easy reset/adjustment to cmte-boat sequence? Good engineering on this one. My strongest recommendation.

Great Toys for the Mountain/Road Bike

The Foretrex 201 should receive many of the same kudos that the Forerunner 201 received even though it is a slightly different model. The track log of the Foretrex 201 will allow you to record horizontal and vertical track profile information to be downloaded and viewed on MapSource software. I recommend the Foretrex for cycling since it can interact with MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager. The map page works great...never to be lost again and the track log drops breadcrumbs as you travel. This track can be based on `DISTANCE', `TIME', or `AUTO'; which allows you to drop a track point based on feet, seconds, or automatically (up to 10,000 trackpoints)-Absolutely Awesome! I purchased the Foretrex 201 in April 2004 and have been extremely happy with its operational capability. I have noticed that the unit is difficult to recharge; however, Garmin agreed to replace my AC Charger. Additionally, the cradle has a slot cutout for the wrist strap to stay on the unit while charging; however, a better connection seems to be attained when you slip the cradle beneath the strap (there is enough room). I hope that one of the two solutions above will solve any future recharging problems. Occasionally, the unit will turn on while plugging the AC cable into the cradle. Again, other than the minor hassle mentioned earlier-the unit operates as advertised. Unfortunately, no software is included with the Foretrex even though they provide a serial connector with each unit. This caught me by surprise since I now have to purchase software such as Garmin's MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager, which Garmin sells on-line (but can be found cheaper through other vendors). In my opinion, this software should come standard with each unit. I was also hoping that Garmin would include something similar to the Forerunner 201 Logbook software, but it is not compatible. It would be nice if the "unit" could display the total vertical climb and descent without downloading it via the software. For those that want the luxury of changing batteries-get the Foretrex 101, otherwise the rechargeable lithium battery comes standard in the Foretrex 201. Positional and altitude readings have been well within acceptable tolerances! Still learning, but seems to be everything I wanted plus more!
Excellent mini GPS for Military use

Review Date: December 11, 2005
Reviewer: Jim, England UK
I have been using the Foretrex 201 for over a year in Iraq. This mini GPS is an excellent peice of equipment that gives you that essential ten figure grid on the move whenever you need it, without having to physically pull it out of a pocket. It also has a basic but functional track system which memorises your routes between your own inputted points. Its simplicity, generous functions and potentially life saving feature of just like being another watch, make this an essential peice of equipment for those of you who need to know exactly where they are at the flick of a wrist. awesome, would'nt go out without it
Powered Paraglider Flyer

Review Date: November 10, 2005
Reviewer: Thomas G. May, Los Angeles, CA
I love this GPS. The GOTO function is especially usefull, I set the GOTO point to my LZ and off I go, just flying around without having to keep track of where I'm going. I just enjoy the scenery and when it's time to return this little gem tells me which way to fly to the LZ. I have distance and time to destination on the GOTO screen, that way I know if the fuel I have left will get me to the LZ based on the known consumption of my motor, or if I have to start looking for an alternate LZ close to the road for easy retreival. Other screen is configured to show altitude, ground speed and vertical speed as well as Lat and Long.

I turn the unit on just prior to launch and off just after landing, I do this for each flight I take. When I get home I download the track information to my Garmin mapping software, trim the non-flying parts from before launch and after landing and save the track to a file, that way I have an electronic record of every flight I take for future reference.

The one thing I would like to change would be the ability to scroll both ways through the available screens so I wouldn't need to scroll through all the screens to get to the previous screen, but that's a fairly minor peeve. The waterproof case is great and the rechargable Lithium Ion battery life is plenty for a week-ends worth of flights as I don't fly for more than about 2 hours at a time. All in all an excellent product.
Paragliding with Foretrex 201

Review Date: May 22, 2005
Reviewer: A. Levy, West Palm Beach, FL
I have found this tool invaluable for paragliding. I get an accurate altitude and speed as well as many other great features. The bird crumb trail is also great if you get lost up there. Since it doesn't have it, a ground map really wouldn't matter much in the air. I'm sure some would beg to differ. The option for a large readout is also great. You can view four fields at the same time! I use Altitude, Speed, Distance and Time. It also has an arm strap. I put it up on my forearm because or the angle of my wrist while using the brake toggle. This was a very carefully thoughtout device!

Product Description

Magellan's Sportrak Map--with its gray monochrome screen and limited data upload--is a little bit old school. But that's not bad. Think of the Sportrak Map as a jeep--rugged exterior, spartan controls (that are easy to access), and all the power you need to get you to any destination, whether it be the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest or the urban jungle.

This Map model resides at the low end of Magellan's Sportrak series, which is geared more toward the outdoorsy type than the business person navigating appointments from the car. The Sportrak Map offers a 2 MB built-in map database of North America, a relatively small 6 MB flash memory for downloading maps and points of interest from your PC, storage for 500 waypoints and 20 routes, and WAAS reception (more on that in a moment).

Our first of the Sportrak Map was that it was much smaller than we imagined from the online images we'd seen. At 2.2 inches wide and 5.6 inches, it's about the same size as our old Nokia 5190, and its 6.1-ounce weight is slightly lighter than that old behemoth. The controls at the bottom of the device are well laid out and easily accessible, whether you're right- or left-handed (though the smaller Enter and Nav buttons could prove challenging if wearing bulky gloves). The 2.2 by 1.4-inch grayscale display was adequate, and definitely geared toward handheld viewing.

The Sportrak Map has 9 information screens, including compass, track details, and satellite status. It also has such useful features as track back (which helps you to retrace your steps to previous waypoints) and a track-to-route saving function. (A track represents your current direction of travel, but it won't be saved to your GPS until it's created as a route.)

As mentioned, the Sportrak Map is a fairly base-level GPS unit, which can be a bit disconcerting for GPS newbies. Though it does have a North American land-mass and waterway database, it does not show much mapping detail (save for major highway systems and points of interest like airports and lakes). Again, the Sportrak Map is best used for hikes, mountain biking treks, and the like. You can easily set it to capture the path you follow (i.e., create a track) with specific markers (waypoints), and then upload this set longitude/latitude data to a PC to record your route. Our first attempt at naming a waypoint, which requires using the thumbpad to navigate to onscreen letters and numbers, took longer than it should, but we devised a system that kept our names short but recognizeable.

In our testing, we had access to a Magellan Mapsend CD-ROM, and were able to download maps to the Sportrak Map. We grabbed a large swath of the Seattle metropolitan area (including detailed city streets) and transferred it easily to the device (the file was a little over 3 MB, or half the available memory). Smaller map selections for multiple hikes and such will definitely fit on the device, though highly detailed topographical maps may not.

As with most new handheld GPS receivers released since the middle of 2003, the Sportrak Map adds WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation Service) reception for a reading of your location that's accurate to about 3 meters. Is it handy? Definitely, for some--but it will be mostly transparent to you under typical use. For others, such as a friend who is plotting specific hikes in the Pacific Northwest for a book, the accuracy WAAS provides will improve the precision of tracks and offer better detail for map illustrations.

The Sportrak Map isn't the most powerful GPS receiver out there. But if you're looking for a navigation device that offers accuracy, transfer of routes and waypoints to a PC, and a modicum of extended features (such as detailed map download), the Sportrak Map might just be your ticket to adventure. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • Easy to use, accurate GPS receiver for outdoor activities
  • Ruggedized, waterproof exterior (that even floats)
  • Internal memory enough for medium-sized map downloads
  • Ability transfer of routes and waypoints to PC via included serial cable
Cons:
  • 6 MB memory won't be enough for detailed topographical maps
  • No external memory card capability (for that see Magellan's Meridian series)
  • Isn't recommended as primary in-city navigation device

Product Details

  • 12-channel GPS receiver; WAAS enabled for up to 3 meter accuracy
  • 2 MB North American basemap of roads, waterways, parks, and more
  • 6 MB memory for additional map downloads
  • Large, easy-to-read display; 9-key keypad for quick access to software features
  • Rugged, waterproof design; Quadifiler Helix antenna for superior tracking in harsh environments
